Lens Effect

A long time ago I did a funny discovery. It totally slipped my mind until MoGraph was announced.

Here is the result, read on to discover how it is done.

paint-effect

Follow up:

Well actually it is quite simple.
Place a plane just in front of the camera.
Add a transparent texture with some refraction (1.5) and with a bump-map. The bump-map will make the effect, so play around with noise or textures or even images.

setup

You can also add an image to the transparency channel to get weird effects like this.

painteffect

This one is done with Cell noise;
paint-effect-box
VL Noise;

Sema;

Hama;

Electric;
electric
and so on

Enjoy!

Are you using 9.6 to animate the noise? I'm not getting anything near this effect.

I would really appreciate it if you could send me the scene file, I feel like an idiot but I just can't get this working.

Hi guyz, nice trick,
like deformation maps in postproduction...
Anyway, to make it work you need to up your refraction value in transparency channel...
cheers

the refraction is necessary to make this working.

Great tip! It works great in other 3d apps as well. (Carrara 5 Pro)

do you mean this http://www.base80.com/index.php/2006/01/25/make_an_even_background_c4d_basics

Yes that's what i meant :-)
In that tutorial, you note to write to you for a tutorial on how to change the actual color.
Could you please show us newbies how you create your .gif animation outputs....you know the ones like the piston....just how you render them out and the colors applied to the objects and how the grey background is achieved.......eg: Light setup....etc etc.

Thanks Base 80 you rock !!

Good tip, may i am wrong but couldn´t you use this technique for lenses. For example distortion or fisheys?!

Many thanks
Comment from: base80 [Member] Email : 2006-08-27 @ 23:16
I think you could use this to do lens distortions

I'm in r8.2 and am having trouble with the animation starting from the "stopped" position, no effect, and going forward to full effect.

what param(s) are you animating in this?

TIA
Comment from: c4dcafeuser42 [Visitor] : 2006-10-10 @ 03:38
OK. i figured out my mistake. i assumed that the noise needed to be animated in its property page, but keeping the noise still (not animated) and animating the bump map strength gave me restults closer to yours.

Thanks again for sharing.

Which texture did u use to make an alectric efect?? A don't have any "Electric" in Noise textures.
Comment from: base80 [Member] Email : 2006-12-22 @ 01:38
Electric is part of C4D R.9

this is a handy effect, works great to use a bumpy displacement like this over geometric objects rather than just a flat plane. For simple displacement effects I would personally use After Effects
